Proudly serving Victorville, Hesperia, and Apple Valley in the High Desert
Completing your orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign is a major achievement—you’ve worked hard to get a straight, healthy smile, and now it’s time to enjoy the results. But the journey doesn’t quite end there.
To protect the time and investment you’ve put into your smile, there’s one essential step you can’t skip: wearing your retainer.
At our High Desert orthodontic office, we’re committed to helping patients of all ages—from children to teenagers to adults—maintain beautiful, lasting results. Here's everything you need to know about why retainers are so important and how to care for them.
Why Retainers Are So Important After Braces or Invisalign
After your braces come off or you finish your last Invisalign tray, your teeth are in their ideal positions—but they’re not quite settled yet. Your gums, bones, and surrounding tissues need time to stabilize around your new alignment.
Without a retainer, your teeth can gradually shift back to their old positions—this is called orthodontic relapse. Wearing your retainer helps hold your teeth in place and protects the smile you've worked so hard to achieve.
Benefits of wearing your retainer include:
- Keeping your teeth straight and properly aligned
- Preserving the results of your braces or Invisalign
- Preventing crowding, gaps, or bite issues from returning
- Supporting long-term comfort and jaw stability
Types of Retainers We Offer in the High Desert
At our office, we provide custom retainers based on your treatment and lifestyle needs. There are two main types:
1. Removable Retainers
These can be taken out when eating, brushing, or for special occasions. There are two common types:
- Clear Retainers (Essix-style):
Nearly invisible and similar to Invisalign trays. They’re comfortable, discreet, and fit snugly over your teeth. - Hawley Retainers:
Made from acrylic and metal wire, these are durable and allow for some minor adjustments if needed.
Pros:
Easy to clean and convenient for daily use.
Things to note:
They can be lost or damaged if not stored properly.
2. Fixed Retainers
Also known as permanent retainers, these are thin wires bonded behind the front teeth—usually on the lower arch.
Pros:
You don’t have to remember to wear them—they’re always in place.
Things to note:
Requires extra care when brushing and flossing to prevent plaque buildup.
How Often Should You Wear Your Retainer?
Your orthodontist will give you personalized instructions, but here’s a general guideline:
- First 3–6 months: Wear your retainer full-time (20–22 hours per day)
- After 6 months: Shift to wearing it at night only
- Long-term: Nighttime wear is typically recommended for life
Think of your retainer like a seatbelt for your smile—it keeps everything in place long after the main work is done.
What Happens If You Don’t Wear Your Retainer?
Skipping or forgetting your retainer—even for a short time—can lead to unwanted shifting. In some cases, changes in alignment can start within days or weeks of not wearing it.
Potential consequences include:
- Crooked or crowded teeth
- New gaps forming
- Bite misalignment
- Needing re-treatment with braces or Invisalign
If your retainer stops fitting, don’t delay—call our office right away to avoid losing progress.
How to Take Care of Your Retainer
For Removable Retainers:
- Rinse and gently brush daily with lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush
- Avoid hot water—it can warp plastic
- Use a retainer or denture cleaner weekly
- Always store your retainer in its case when not in use
(Tip: Never wrap it in a napkin—many get accidentally thrown away this way!)
For Fixed Retainers:
- Use floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean around the wire
- Maintain regular dental cleanings
Contact us if the wire becomes loose or breaks
