What to Do When Something Goes Wrong with Your Braces: A Guide to Orthodontic Emergencies At Joe Orthodontics, we’re here to help.
Starting orthodontic treatment is an exciting step toward a healthier, more confident smile—but like any medical journey, a few bumps along the way are perfectly normal. Whether your child breaks a bracket during a soccer game or you wake up with a poking wire before a big event, knowing what to do can make a big difference.
At Joe Orthodontics, we’re committed to helping patients in Victorville, Hesperia, and Apple Valley feel prepared and supported, even when something unexpected happens. Most orthodontic issues are minor and can be managed at home, but it’s always good to know when to call us.
Here’s a simple guide to help you understand common orthodontic problems, how to handle them, and when to contact our office.
What Counts as an Orthodontic Emergency?
True orthodontic emergencies are rare—but if you experience any of the following, contact us right away:
- Severe pain that doesn’t go away
- Injury to your mouth, face, or teeth
- Bleeding that won’t stop
- Swelling, fever, or signs of infection
- A wire or appliance that’s cutting into your mouth or making it hard to breathe
Most other issues are minor and can be temporarily managed at home until we can see you.
Common Issues and What to Do About Them
1. Loose Bracket or Band
What’s happening: A bracket may come loose from your tooth, especially if you’ve eaten something hard or taken a hit to the mouth.
At-home care:
If it’s still attached to the wire and not painful, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to reduce irritation. If it has completely come off, store it in a clean container and bring it to your appointment.
When to call us:
Contact our office during regular hours so we can schedule a repair. The sooner it’s fixed, the better your treatment will stay on track.
2. Poking or Shifted Wire
What’s happening: As your teeth move, a wire may shift and start to poke your cheek, lip, or gums.
At-home care:
Try to gently push the wire back using a cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil. You can also apply orthodontic wax to the area. If the wire is really uncomfortable and you feel confident, you may use sterilized nail clippers to trim it.
When to call us:
If it’s still causing discomfort or you’re unsure what to do, give us a call—we’ll schedule a quick fix.
3. General Soreness or Tooth Sensitivity
What’s happening: It’s normal to feel some soreness after getting braces or following an adjustment.
At-home care:
Stick to soft foods for a couple of days—soups, smoothies, yogurt, and mashed potatoes work well. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Rinsing with warm salt water also helps soothe tender spots.
When to call us:
If the soreness lasts more than a few days or becomes more intense, give us a call to make sure everything is on track.
4. Lost or Broken Retainer
What’s happening: Your retainer helps keep your teeth in place after treatment—losing or damaging it can cause your teeth to shift.
At-home care:
Don’t try to fix or bend it yourself. Stop wearing a damaged retainer and keep it in a clean case until we can take a look.
When to call us:
Call us right away so we can replace it before any changes happen to your smile.
5. Mouth Sores or Irritation
What’s happening: Brackets and wires can cause small sores inside your mouth, especially early on in treatment.
At-home care:
Apply orthodontic wax over rough spots, rinse your mouth with warm salt water, and use soothing products like Orajel if needed. Stick to soft, cool foods for a few days.
When to call us:
If a sore doesn’t heal within a few days or becomes painful, let us know.
How to Prevent Orthodontic Emergencies
While not everything can be avoided, many common issues can be prevented with a few simple habits:
- Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods (like ice, popcorn, nuts, caramel, or gum)
- Wear a mouthguard during sports or other high-impact activities
- Brush and floss daily to keep your teeth and braces clean
- Follow all care instructions from our team
- Don’t skip your regular checkups—these help us catch small issues before they become big problems
